Will digital content bring ambient TV?
A scenario process for KPN investigated the development and integration of television content into mobile and other devices. The team thought through the trends affecting people’s experience of digital content. Expert interviews, involving DirecTV – group of 700 satellite stations – Internet Archive, and others brought critical insights to deepen the process and add to the robust logic of the scenarios. The scenarios anticipated YouTube and online videos.
From the Driving Forces and Uncertainties
Storage capacity: New storage growth and network speed enabling personal video libraries, fast sharing of content, exponential growth in accessible resources.
Home media and the digital hub: Digital media technologies are changing media consumption habits and media platforms at home. People are watching less TV, and paying less attention to the programs they do watch. Is “ambient TV” a coming phenomenon? Consumer appetite for home entertainment systems is thriving. Broadband access provides constant connectivity and the Internet for news and entertainment.
Personal video on the web: At the simplest level audiences will want to organize and re-order content the way they want it. At another level, audiences will want to create these streams of video themselves from scratch, with or without the help of access providers or content creators. Software such as iChat, iSight, iMovie and iDVD will further enable the creation of large amounts of bottom-up content with great convenience.
