Neelie Kroes – European Commissioner for Digital Agenda

Lessons learned from the new Generation

“There is so much talent in the EU and so much innovation at stake, but we badly need to create an environment where we can pamper those talented bright young people. We need to support them. All this entrepreneurship is there, but let them get an opportunity and let us appreciate them!”

Marcello Cordioli –  CIO of the year winner 2011

CIO Marcello Cordioli and his IT Group at Permasteelisa have played a fundamental role in helping the organization pursue its mission to design and build avant-garde architectural projects in collaboration with the most respected architecture firms, by applying innovative high technology solutions – principally aluminium and glass coverings of buildings.

“Managing the diversity of culture, the diversity of business processes is the most difficult thing. Asking a German to make a medium quality product he can not do it and asking a Chinese to make a high quality product he can not do it. These are cultural differences and there mentality is completely different. Technology is going to be simple in the future and managing this infrastructure is going to be simpler. We can simplify a lot in ICT.”

Daniel Lebeau – CIO of the year winner 2011

Daniel Lebeau, CIO of GSK Biologicals, does not seek people with an IT background to become part of his IT group, called BioIT.

“You need a leader to move into a certain direction. And basic skills are framing, visioning, stretching, caring and that will not change overtime. Look at what gives value and what is waste, but you can not eliminate waste. Delivering new projects gives new functionalities so everything before and after is waste. Deliver value and focus on that.”

Erik Cuypers

CIO Thomas Cook
Eric Cuypers was head of communications , operations & IT banking at the ING bank. Now CIO with the pan-European travel organization Thomas Cook.

“Still a lot of CIO’s think that you need a lot of people in my department otherwise I am not important, but it is not about this. It’s about how you can leverage your business with a technology background, also with knowledge of how to manage IT, how you can deliver. But running an IT factory is something else. You need to have a lot of skills because the old ICT is dead.”

Yves Schellekens

Partner at CSC
Yves has been active in the ICT for over 20 years in different areas of the business.

“CSC is not a one vendor type of company and therefor are free to make the right advise to clients including cloud computing. ICT leaders have lost leadership to consumerization.
If ICT companies are not moving fast enough some of these companies will not be needed any longer. Many ICT services now are free, flexible, but that’s not how CIO’s are thinking”
