Niall Murphy

Niall founded the DTN with Daniel Erasmus in 1996. Niall is an accomplished and successful entrepreneur and technologist, and has spent his career at the vanguard of the evolving digital world. His work has applied scenario thinking in policy formulation and innovation development. Niall has invested in his own forward looking insights, and has founded and developed a number of successful business in digital media and internet communications.

Niall is a partner at the DTN, principal of Kubu Ventures, CEO of Ideaworks3D, Founder / CEO of Evrythng, Founder / non-executive director of The Cloud, and non-executive director of Worksnug.

Niall founded Evrythng in Sept 2009, a new venture in the ‘internet of things’ market place. He co-founded The Cloud in 2003, which he developed to be the leading public WiFi network in Europe and which has been recognised as a market leader in the development of mobile internet experiences by the World Economic Forum. Prior to The Cloud, Niall founded a number of digital media related businesses in South Africa – all successfully sold. In 1994 he founded a joint venture internet service provider in South Africa with Sprint, later sold to UUnet.

Niall has authored and presented many papers around the world on various aspects of internet development and the emerging mobile internet, contributes regulatory research in the UK and elsewhere on an ongoing basis, and regularly provides opinion and commentary to business and technology media and analysts.

He was a co-author of a protocol framework in 2005, adopted by IETF as a basis for seamless wireless roaming. Niall contributed as a policy advisor on telecoms in South Africa in the early 90’s through an African National Congress (ANC) think tank. He was invited to work on South Africa’s 2020 Foresight programme between 1996 and 1998 under the deputy president’s office.

Niall holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science & Actuarial Science from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.
